Monkeying around

August 30th, 2010 · Dork Report

I’ve been indoor rock climbing since May. After going on and on about it for years, and finally trying it out in LA in 2008, it took another couple of years to convince someone to go with me up here. Kristina got suckered in, and after going once a week after our belay lesson, we bought memberships and started going twice a week, sometimes more. For a while I even started doing yoga – until I got super stressed out and didn’t have time for it anymore. Now, as August nears its end and my climbing skills are hovering somewhere between 5.10a and 5.10b, I sadly have to cancel my membership. But, I’m not ready to give up on climbing yet, so my climbing gear’s going on the plane with me and I really hope I’ll be able to find someone cool to climb with in New York. I’ll miss the people I’ve convinced to try climbing: Kristina, Leta, Francis, Ann, Jackie, Oliver and Vicki (a chance sighting turned into her being unable to escape me). Perhaps one day they’ll come out to visit and want to spend their precious vacation time making their arms sore on fake rocks. I wish I had been more diligent about taking pictures but today was the first day I wore pants with pockets and it’s not like I could snap photos while belaying…

NKOTB Rules! No! They Suck!

August 27th, 2010 · Dork Report

I found this little gem while cleaning out my life. Apparently I objected to what she had to say – I’m not even sure if I inherited this pencil box or if I seized the moment when she let it out of her sight despite the fact that Joe McIntyre supposedly wrote in it to declare that his own group, New Kids on the Block, rules, and I guess gave himself an A? And just like I am today, I was quick to deny enjoying some shameless boy bands, even though back in the day I was quite fluent in NKOTB ballads.

Overwhelmed

August 12th, 2010 · Dork Report

Have shitty allergies that are starting to make me think I actually have a cold because I woke up with a sore throat, can’t stop sneezing and coughing and the allergy pill I popped doesn’t seem to be helping.

After ignoring my hosting for too long I ended up having to shell out more money to turn my sites back on today. And I’m totally not going to have time to transfer them to my other host so next month I’ll have to pay again. Sigh.

Trying to do some mad cleaning, so maybe the allergies are dust related since everything seems to be kicked up.

Ugh. Who knew getting what I was going after could be so teeth-grindingly stressful?

Does this mean I have a chance?

August 4th, 2010 · Dork Report

“Konichiwa, bitch. E! Online (via iNTouch Weekly) reports:

According to the tabloid, JGL and Lucy Liu were spotted last week at Periyali restaurant in New York City having quite the romantic diner. “They were kissing at the table, and she was stroking his arm,” an onlooker tells the magazine. “The age difference didn’t seem to bother Lucy at all. They looked good together—and very comfortable!” Did Hollywood’s hot new hunk really nab himself an older lady? That’s not what we’re hearing. A rep for Lucy and Joseph (the two stars have the same publicist) denies the two are a couple, saying they are “not romantically involved in the least.” We’re gonna go with business over pleasure for this dinner. Apparently, Lucy already has a boyfriend, and the meal the two shared was nothing but friendly. Good to know, these two seemed just a bit random for our taste! Then again, when we witnessed Joseph getting cozy with Devon Aoki back in June at the BING party we were a little taken aback too.

I really don’t care who Joseph Gordon-Levitt is dating, but umm, does E! employ any Asians? I get the feeling if they did, E! would make the lobby music “Chopsticks” and have a strict “no roast duck” policy in the employee handbook, because apparently white guys look weird with Asian chicks.”

Really, Craigslist?

July 21st, 2010 · Dork Report

CAPTCHAs rarely make sense, they’re mostly just annoying. Sometimes they’re so hard to read that I’ve noticed Craigslist doesn’t even care if you get one or two letters wrong. But now it seems they’re trying to get users to pay attention. Usually I just blindly type squiggles hoping I’m getting them right but last night there was no way I could have missed realizing I was actually typing out  ”of labia” to submit my posting. Perverts.

Falling asleep would be nice

July 20th, 2010 · Dork Report

I probably got about seven hours of sleep last night, possibly more. I couldn’t sleep so I turned on a podcast and have no idea when that put me out. The point is, I woke up around 10 something, which is when I’ll normally wake up if not interrupted, regardless of when I fall asleep. Ten-ish has been my waking point for years. If only I could figure out a good sleeping point, because when I’m forced to wake up before ten, it’s so much harder and more painful.

I woke up, prepared for a call that never happened, and set about my usual day or searching and applying. Ate lunch, continued the process, dicked around on the Internet here and there, but for the most part, concentrated on the task at hand. So essentially, I had a normal work day, except for way less chatting because for the most part, I’ve turned off chatting so I could focus.

Then I went rock climbing for a couple of hours though not as intensely because I was all weak from the weekend. Got home, did my eight minutes, then sat back down and started searching again until midnight when I turned off the computer because I’d been on it all day.

Problem is, I wasn’t tired. Two and a half hours later, I’m still not. I’ve tried to sleep, but I can’t. I know the pattern will repeat itself and then later, I’ll be awake at ten. I get frustrated by my inability to sleep which prevents it even more. Usually I struggle for an hour or so before I resign myself to trying the podcast method. Sometimes that works. Other times I have no choice but to distract myself.

Write a blog! Get those thoughts out! Stop driving yourself crazy with the memories, the future, the present, the downright outlandish. But the minute I publish this, I’m back to square one, already thinking about how I can feel the pain from grinding my teeth.

Well, at least I know this for sure, work didn’t make me tired, it kept me up. A lack of it keeps me up too. And exercising doesn’t make me tired, even when done earlier in the day. Even the combination of “work” and exercise fails. Or rather, eventually I guess I do start to feel tired. But that’s moot because my mind won’t let me fucking sleep. So, publish, and get ready for some more lying in bed wide awake until suddenly I’m not. And then it’ll be ten and I’ll be like, “Fuck that, I’m sleeping in!”

Update: I fell asleep at 3 something and woke up around 8:45am. YAY!

Goodbye forever, Party Down

July 6th, 2010 · Dork Report

Party Down is a show I finally started watching earlier this year when Netflix started streaming on the Wii. It had been in my queue for a while, but when I saw that season 2 had begun and would be streaming immediately, I started watching season 1 with plans to segue right into season 2. A couple things got in the way (namely Oz), but I started watching it again and just a few nights ago I finished season 2 at 6:30 am.

Party Down is really funny – just the right mix of predictably obnoxious characters with some characters that really draw you in. The best way I’d compare it is, you watch 30 Rock because the interactions between Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy are consistently great while Jenna, Tracy and Kenneth are funny but not always laugh-out-loud funny. The same goes for Party Down’s Henry and Casey – they’re the only ones who really know how ridiculous their situations are while Roman, Ron, Kyle and Constance (or Lydia) round out the cast with their clueless style.

Well, just like any great show that achieves cult status amongst fans, ie Arrested Development, the network just has to go ahead and cancel it due to low ratings. So, now that I’ve finished season 2 I won’t have any more episodes to look forward to. It’s fairly disappointing. Even though I didn’t get into Party Down with the enthusiasm I did with Arrested Development (probably because it’s damn sad when a show gets canceled, and I didn’t want to think about it), I was already starting to recommend it.

For some reason I thought because it was on Starz that it had a chance – I hadn’t been following the news until, after the first half of season 2, I went on IMDB and discovered that Starz had axed Party Down on last week. This was a surprise to me because I hadn’t paid attention to any of the news regarding the show – I just found it on Netflix one day, saw that Ken Marino and Martin Starr were in it and that Paul Rudd had co-created it, and I was ready to give it a shot. So then to like it and then discover it’s over is just bad news bears. Great writing + good acting + good directing = a formula for disaster, apparently. Le sigh.
