This is why I’m not going to Peru

January 29th, 2010 · No Comments · South America

So, I just got back from a less than steller three-night trip to southern Bolivia (details later) and got an email from one of the Aussies mentioning, “something something landslides and helicopter evacuations.” I figured Laura was joking, since I had expressed my doubts about seeing Machu Picchu during the wet season, but Sharina confirmed that they were indeed trapped with 2500 other tourists, and evacuated by a helicopter. How exciting! Boy am I glad I’ve opted out of seeing Peru this time around. I’m sure lots of clean-ups and repairs are due, and having visited several pre-Olympics are World Cup cities, the last thing I want to do is get nice views of tarps and scaffolding. Anyway, about seven people died and houses were destroyed, so enough about me bitching about my travel plans. Glad my friends are okay and am awaiting photos of them miserable in the mud, as I predicted.
