4000 steps to productivity

Today, I admitted defeat and got out of bed. I had been telling myself that it was okay for me to work (er, find work) from bed, but if the past few days could talk, they would cry, “Bullshit!” Last week I had gotten out of my bed and was sitting in my desk chair, trying to accomplish something, but the frigid temperatures drove me back under my covers where the most I can get done is think about what I’d write in my cover letter instead of actually writing.

And so today I ate lunch, threw my crap in my backpack, slapped on some sunscreen and hoofed it two miles to my beloved library. On the way, I passed a bunch of Apple nerds and wondered if they were excited or embarrassed by today’s “thrilling” unveiling of some decidedly lackluster and basic features for iPhone 4.0. When I got to the library I found a nice spot to sit down – I figured if I was going to be distracted it might as well be by the water spouts outside than a book stack.

If people were to look at me right now, I’d probably appear to be very deep in thought, concentrating very hard at the task on hand. But if they ripped my headphones out, they’d discover me listening to SexyBack, and if they looked under the table they’d see my toes wiggling to Justin Timberlake. Shh.

Obviously there’s internet here, but it’s so slow and frustrating that I really have nothing to do besides blog and write cover letters. I already have a few lines down that I know are just going to be deleted in a matter of minutes but it doesn’t matter. At least I’m actually in the mindset to get some work done. The uncluttered desk helps while the wooden chair reminds me that my time in bed has messed up my back; it’s very tender and hurts when I lean back on this one section of my spine.

Let’s see how many job applications this trip to the library will result in. I’m aiming for three separate companies this week.
